Pinterest is easily the most powerful organic, traffic-generating platform for anyone in the wedding industry, especially wedding photographers. Essentially, Pinterest functions like a search engine, in that it has the potential to drive a high level of traffic to your website from the platform.

For wedding photographers, building a strong Pinterest presence should be a no-brainer. But the fact of the matter is: how do you make your business stand out amid a platform where users save nearly 900 Million wedding related Pins every single year? It’s gotta be too competitive to even try, right? Not with the right strategy! This blog will assist you in creating a Pinterest marketing strategy that is specifically designed to help grow your wedding photography business by driving browsing ‘to-be-weds’ directly to your website.

Create a Pinterest Business Account

First things first; you’ll want to set up a Pinterest business account. There are so many benefits of a Pinterest business account such as:

  • Rich Pins - They call them Rich Pins because they enrich the user experience and the content of your Pins. Once Rich Pins have been enabled for your website, Pins from your site (which are now Rich Pins) will automatically be populated with website data to provide Pinners with more details. This will help increase engagement with your content.

  • Pinterest Analytics Dashboard- A Pinterest business account gives you access to the Pinterest analytics dashboard. This is a must-have feature if you’re serious about building a Pinterest marketing strategy because it allows you to track key metrics such as which Pins are performing the best. There are two Analytics dashboards for keeping track of activity on your Pinterest account and activity from your website.

  • Promoted Pins - This is Pinterest's ad feature which allows you to pay in order to have a Pin promoted to a larger audience. This is only available for business accounts.

Identify Your Target Audience

One of the core components in developing a Pinterest marketing strategy is knowing who you are targeting; who do you want to click on your Pins and be direct to your website? You can’t define your business goals without this crucial information, and you certainly can’t create a marketing plan if you don’t understand what your audience is looking for.

As a wedding photographer, your target audience should be your dream client. That is a bride or groom who you’d love to book your services - someone who’s wedding style and location suits your aesthetic. If you haven’t already defined your target audience, don’t worry. This process won’t take long - and it might completely transform your use of Pinterest!

This simple worksheet will help you pinpoint exactly who your target audience is, and hone in on some great wedding adjectives and descriptions which you can save and refer to during your keyword research (more on that below).

Make Your Pinterest Account SEO-Friendly

Remember - Pinterest is more than just a source of inspiration. It is actually a search engine, with a unique algorithm and ranking system. In order for Pinterest to consider your Pins and account in search results, there are several SEO best practices that you can implement to increase your exposure.

One of the most important ways to implement SEO best practices is through keywords. You can learn more about keywords, what they are, and how to research them, through our blog: How to Use Keywords on Pinterest as a Wedding Photographer.

For now, be sure to include keywords in each area outlined below. Conduct an audit of your profile, and ensure that you are using keywords in the following places:

  • Your Profile Name

  • Your Profile Bio

  • Board Titles

  • Board Descriptions

  • Pin Titles

  • Pin Descriptions

Lean into Pinterest’s resources, such as their Possibilities Planner, Categories feature and Pinterest Trends, to find relevant keywords and topics that suit you as a wedding photographer. Both of these resources should help you find ‘subcategories’ within the wedding industry - and know what brides are looking for! Make a note of trending wedding styles, venue types, floral types, and catering trends - and be sure to pin any photographic content that you have that captures these elements!

Pin Consistently

In order to Pin consistently, you need plenty of content. If you are struggling to figure out how to make your content stretch, or need some inspiration as to what else you can Pin, why not check out our tips in our article: What to Pin on Pinterest as a Wedding Photographer.

If you want to grow your momentum, you need to Pin consistently. We recommend that you Pin as many as 15-25 Pins per day. As part of your Pinterest marketing strategy, you might consider a publishing and scheduling tools such as Tailwind, to help you set a sustainable pace based on your available content. Check out our blog, What is Tailwind to learn more about how this scheduling tool can benefit your wedding photography business (we highly recommend it).

Of course, maintaining a constant pin rhythm requires having ample content to pin. Pro Tip: you can maximize your content’s reach by aiming to pin every piece of content to 5 Pinterest boards (but no more than 10). For this reason, having multiple boards is a key part of any thorough Pinterest marketing strategy. If you need some fresh inspiration for new boards, how about checking out our article Pinterest Board Ideas for Your Wedding Photography Business. We recommend that you have an array of boards from a mixture of broad topics to niche specifics such as ‘wedding dresses’ vs ‘lace wedding dress’. This means that there is likely to be thematic overlap between boards - making it easier to pin content across multiple.

Measure Your Progress with Pinterest Analytics

As a business owner you can’t afford to avoid using this invaluable tool. When you dive into your Pinterest Analytics, you want to be sure that you are focusing on the right metrics. Rather than worrying about monthly views - the key metric you need to be focusing on is the amount of traffic that is being driven to your website.

The best way to hone in on a strategy that works for your brand and for your client base is by monitoring your analytics month-to-month and monitoring what’s working. Do this by taking note of what images or products drive the most traffic to your website, and aim to focus more attention on your top performers.

You can then start creating Fresh Pins using new images that you haven’t yet used on Pinterest, to maximize the reach of your already successful content and drive more traffic to the top-performing material on your website. You might want to consider making graphics (with a text overlay) out of your top-performing images - knowing that they are already performing well. We’ve compiled all our top tips on making eye-catching graphics, in our article: How to Make Pinterest Pins Beautiful & Click-Worthy.

Following these easy steps will help you build a Pinterest strategy for your wedding photography business like a pro. You’ll see a clear increase in website hits, which will, no doubt, lead to some new client relationships!
